Dance

The right age to start Indian classical arts

The most common question parents ask: when should we start? Here are sensible age ranges for the major art forms — and the signs of readiness that matter more than a birthday.

Classical dance: around 5–7

Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak usually start around ages 5–7, once a child can follow instructions, hold basic posture, and sit through a structured class. Some schools offer a playful pre-dance class earlier to build rhythm and coordination.

Vocal music: around 6–8

Carnatic and Hindustani vocal training often begins around 6–8, when children can match pitch and repeat patterns reliably. Starting with vocals builds the ear that every instrument later depends on.

Instruments: a little later

Instruments like violin, veena, sitar or tabla typically suit ages 7–9+, partly for hand size and strength. Many students learn vocals first, then add an instrument once the fundamentals of raga and tala are in place.

Readiness beats age — and it's never too late

Attention span, interest, and a willingness to practice matter more than the exact age. And adults start too: plenty of teachers welcome adult beginners in dance, music, and yoga. Start where you are.
