How to choose a Bharatanatyam teacher
Choosing the right Bharatanatyam teacher shapes years of your child's learning. The good news: a short list of questions tells you almost everything you need before the first class.
Ask about their training and lineage
Bharatanatyam is passed down through a guru-shishya lineage. Ask where and under whom the teacher trained, how long they studied, and whether they've performed or completed their own arangetram. A teacher rooted in a recognized school (Kalakshetra, Pandanallur, Vazhuvoor and others) brings a consistent, authentic style.
Understand the path to arangetram
The arangetram — a student's solo debut — is a milestone that usually comes after 7–10 years of training. Ask how the teacher structures those years, roughly when students perform, and what the arangetram involves (and costs) so there are no surprises down the road.
